30/05/18: In December 2017 the Government launched the careers strategy. The strategy sets out a long term plan to build a world class careers system that will help young people and adults choose the career that`s right for them. Governors can find out more information on the careers strategy here. Further information on what schools need to do to comply with the statutory guidance can be found here.
02/05/18: DfE has launched a consultation on home education (closes on 2 July 2018). The online survey includes these questions:

  1. * What steps might help reduce the incidence of schools reportedly pressuring parents to remove children to educate them at home?
  2. * Should there be a financial consequence for schools if a parent withdraws a child from the school roll to educate at home?

02/05/18: DfE have released a beta version of a data protection toolkit for schools, to support schools to manage data protection and implement the new data protection regulations.
02/05/18: Following their recent consultation on primary assessment, DfE has published an update on measuring progress in primary schools. The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has been chosen to deliver the new baseline test for reception children, which will be rolled out to all schools by the end of 2020.
02/05/18: `Twin classroom dilemma: to study together or separately?`, research led by Goldsmiths, University of London finds no strong evidence that putting twins (whether identical or non-identical) into different classes at school is better for them academically.
02/05/18: The parliamentary education committee has launched an inquiry into the level of school and sixth-form funding, to consider whether a 10-year plan is needed to preserve `high quality` education. They have also launched an enquiry into support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) - the deadline for written submissions is 14 June 2018.
02/05/18: A report from Ambition School Leadership Building Trusts - MAT leadership and coherence of vision, strategy and operations has identified nine `breakpoints` for small and medium-sized MATs, related to issues including expansion and school improvement.
02/05/18: The risk protection arrangement (RPA) is an alternative to commercial insurance for academy trusts. Academy trusts can opt in to the scheme before they convert or before their current insurance arrangements come to an end. Read guidance for academy trusts about RPA.
02/05/18: Why Closing the Word Gap Matters report by Oxford University Press finds that the number of pupils with limited vocabulary remains `stubbornly high` across all age groups, despite a range of programmes addressing literacy. According to academics, 4 out of 10 pupils in their first year of secondary school have such a limited vocabulary that it is affecting their learning.
